404 on comments

Alright, so I’ve hit my first big snag in the switch back to Wordpress. Maybe you can help. Maybe you tried to comment and noticed this. I’ve been seeing a lot of 404 errors from comments. For example:

A user tried to go to http://www.standardsforlife.com http://www.standardsforlife.com/ sell-your-message-not-fonts/#comment-2033 and received a 404 (page not found) error. It wasn’t their fault, so try fixing it. They came from http://www.standardsforlife.com/wp-comments-post.php

So for some reason Wordpress is putting the domain in there twice, AND it’s putting out a comment number that doesn’t exist. Comments are currently still in the 1900’s, so this one, 2033, just isn’t there yet.

Wait, there’s a catch!

This doesn’t happen all the time. I’m still getting about half the comments coming through just fine. So, is it Wordpress? My host? ME (in the template somewhere)?!?!

Try to comment if you dare. :) If you get a 404, just email me.

If you do a test comment, please put your real email address, thanks. (yes, I saw you). ;)

What you are seeing is Akismet in action as it processes a spam, not a valid comment, or at least that is what I surmise it to be. I sometimes use Alex King’s 404 plugin to monitor what sort of 404’s I am getting, and most of them are now spam-related. I notice that whenever I see a 404 of the form sitename.com/sitename.com/…#comment that it always turns out to be spam. Note the post that it is made on, go to your Akismet listing of spam detected, and lo and behold you will see the spam there. I think Akismet gets involved in putting suspected spam through a 404 testing, but I have not actually examined the Akismet coding.

See now that makes perfect sense - and that’s what I suspected at first, but I’ve gotten a couple of emails from people now about it so it seems like it’s catching their’s too and I’m just not seeing them.

Well, I take your dare. I suppose this should lead to a “double dare” or some such but really: who has time for such things?

And if WordPress is slowing you down, how about really pushing the boat out with “Frog](http://www.madebyfrog.com/ or “Chyrp](http://chyrp.net/ (although I’m really just throwing in links to see if that contributes to the 404 :).

ha ha, well, your comment went into moderation but only because it’s your first time posting to this wordpress version of the blog. still, i’m seeing a lot of spam, so that must be it. i noticed a couple of times a real comment got caught by akismet, so there may be others - who has time to go through the spam log before deleting them?
