Who are you 2007

Some call this delurking, but essentially all I’m doing with this post is trying to get to know my visitors. I know about 15-20 of you who comment or email me semi-regularly, or because I read your blog, but most of you I have no idea, so please, take this time now to comment when you might not normally say anything at all.

Here are a few questions for you if you’d like…

Who are you?

Where are you from?

What do you do?

What do you wish you did? :)

Why do you read my blog?
This helps me to know what to keep writing about if there’s something that particularly interests you.

What’s your favorite thing to do NOT involving a computer?

Example:

Hey, I’m Natalie Jost from Indiana. I’m a web designer, and I love it, but wish I could be a real photographer some days. I read this blog because I wrote it, and my favorite thing to do without a computer is knit, crochet and sew.

See, easy!

Hi, I’m Daniel Nicolas from San Diego, California. I’m a student and lazy blogger, but I wish I could be rich. =) I love reading and am subscribed to all the 9rules member’s sites, at least the good ones. Thus when I find that you are delurking, I decided, hey, why not?

=) Thanks for an awesome read.

I’m Tom (’Mas) Pickering from Illinois. I wear many hats: webmaster, web designer, network administrator, musician, singer, photographer, teacher of the Word. I wish I was more bold in my witness and demonstrated true worship more freely. I read your blog because you write well about matters near and dear to the hearts of Godly creative people. Since most everything I do involves a computer in one manner or another, I would have to say the favorite thing I do not involving a computer would be worship. :)

That’s my 2 cents :^{>

I am Ryan from Lynchburg, Virginia. That’s right… Jerry Falwell country. I am a new father, web designer, photographer, etc. I wish I could quit my job and do photography full-time (one day soon, hopefully.) I found you through 9rules and I read because it’s good to hear the voice of a fellow believer in the world of design. My favorite non-computer activity is spending time with my wife and new baby.

Phil Bowell left a comment on January 8, 2007 at 11:23 am | #

Hi, I’m Phil Bowell, I’m from the UK, and I’m not sure if I count as a lurker or not so I’m saying Hi anyway! I’m a student studying Graphic Design and am going to Graduate in 2 terms time! I wish I knew more code so that I could make some of my designs a reality for websites rather than just wishing I could! I read you blog because it interests me, I like your designs, and the talk about design, but I also find the way you talk about your faith very inspirational! My favourite thing to do not a computer is to either see my girlfriends and other friends or play football! ha!

Vicky left a comment on January 8, 2007 at 12:01 pm | #

Hi, I’m Vicky from Plymouth, UK. I’m a website designer and that’s what led me to this blog. I enjoy reading it because I think I’ve got quite a lot in common with Natalie. We’re the same age, Christians, web site designers, amateur photographers and knitters! When I’m not designing websites, I’m either researching my family tree, knitting, helping with the church youth group, salsa dancing or singing in the band I’m a member of.

I’m Bradley Scott Shoemaker, I’m from Indianapolis. I am the Web Director for Clear Channel Radio in Indy and really enjoy this job because it meshes my two passions of Design and Broadcasting. One day when I finally feel I have a clear direction, I wish I would start my own business. I read your blog because I enjoy what you have to say and the way you say it. You are very blunt and to the point. In the broadcasting business I find a lot of people to be blunt and to the point, but typically they’re saying outlandish things just to get listeners, you mean what you say and I find it refreshing. The thing I most enjoy doing that does not involve the computer is being around friends and family. I am a people person and although I enjoy my alone time sometimes, I truly enjoy being around people.

Hello, Natalie. I’m a lurker and am subscribed to your RSS feed. I’m learning to design websites and live in Huntsville, Alabama. I found your site through 9rules and enjoy what you have to say. I am amazed at how well your themes look, especially since you change them so often. Take care.

I’m John Phillips, and I’m from Chicago, but currently live in Royal Oak, Michigan. I am a UI engineer at Campbell-Ewald. I wish I ran my own small design shop fulltime, which is something that I am currently working towards. I read your blog because I enjoy your take on design, and you are an awesome designer. I like to play video games when I’m not on the computer.

My name is Zachary Forrest y Salazar and I live in Austin, TX. I originated in Springfield, MO. I’m a web designer with Dell being my largest client. I found your blog on 9rules and since I write about faith also, your blog has since become a daily read.

I’m also a writer, having self-published both a novel and a collection of poetry. I’m working on my first commercial work.

I’m James Coats and I live in Fort Worth, Texas. I’m a trainer/educator and sometimes web-designer; It would be cool to do more web-design, but really, if I had my wish, I would love to start a private school for kids with disabilities. I love spending time with my wife and kids as well as camping, kayaking, and riding my mountain bike.

Oh, and I found your site from a post on Molly’s blog talking about the “standards in a nutshell” image you’d made (as best I can remember). I continue to come here because I like your approach (your faith, design etc..) … stardards are good :)

Larry Tomlinson left a comment on January 8, 2007 at 1:09 pm | #

I’m Larry Tomlinson, born in the North to parents from the South. Being a military brat, one could say I’m from everywhere and nowhere. I’m a media producer with BCM International, a missions organization that reaches children and builds churches around the world. I sorta wish I was involved more in producing videos, since that’s what I went to school for :). Reading your blog gives me some inspiration sometimes, lets me know I’m not the only one with problems (in a good way), and just lets me keep up with some other Christian designers. My favorite thing NOT to do in front of the computer? Probably go to church, where it’s like a miniature Passion concert every week :)

Andrew left a comment on January 8, 2007 at 2:02 pm | #

Hi, I’m Andy from Huddersfield, UK. I’m a compliance specialist, web designer, and amateur photographer. I don’t really know what I’d like to do for a living as I’m sure whatever I did would end up like work so I guess all is good.

I read your blog because you once wrote something interesting enough for me to subscribe and you have remained interesting enough to keep reading. I read a lot of design blogs as you never know where the next piece of genius will arise.

Favourite thing away from the computer is definitely photography. Britain is a wonderful island to photograph so getting back to nature, falling in rivers, etc, is what I do.

melissa left a comment on January 8, 2007 at 3:58 pm | #

My name is Melissa and I am a web designer located south of Boston. I have been doing this full time for 7 years now and truely enjoy being a freelancer. I love what I do, most days….

I try and read my rss feeds daily but more than likely every few days — specially when I need some inspiration and I am always looking for new techniques.

I have yet to create a blog of my own but have been thinking of doing so. I feel like a shoemakers child where I am working on clients sites but not my own (definately needs updating, been 5 years). There is just too little time in the day.

I typically go to your site to view web information — not so much personal information. I enjoy your photography, poetry and colour schemes.

Keep up the good work and happy new year.

Hey there, I am Scott from darn near Philadelphia, PA. I am (not in any order) a web developer, a network engineer and do a daily morning radio show. I read this blog because I admire the committment you have made to career and life and find it inspirational. I am also amazed at your ability to pick out some awesome colors! I can develop web apps, but just suck at picking colors! My favorite thing to do without a computer is help the local boy scouts, go camping and help out at my church.

Newbie reader :)

I’m Ryan Heath, from West Virginia. I’m a software engineer, and I absolutely love web development. There’s nothing more I’d rather do other than write/design software, so I think I’m in the write field. I heavily enjoy DB design, but I’m a fanatic for classy CSS design as well. I strongly believe in standards, and I guess that’s what attracted me to your site. I listen to the Web 2.0 podcast, and I heard you on there once (I believe a pre-show interview?). So I decided to look up your site, and I’m subscribed.

I love sports, especially college, specifically WVU.

That’s pretty much about it.

I’m Stephen Tudor, and I live west of Philadelphia, PA. By day, I am a programmer (which at times can feel like firefighting), and by night a freelance web designer and musician.

I wish I could play music live and in the studio on a full-time basis, as that’s my favorite thing to do, but I’m pretty happy with where I’m at.

I read your blog not only because I think you’re on point with your views on web design, but also because you’re one of the only Christian voices I know of who speaks to the topic. I found that you often had something interesting to say, so I subbed to your feed.

Hi Natalie:

I’m Karla. I live in Nashville, but I grew in Maryland. I am a SAHM, but I have a design business designing and handcrafting wedding invitations and birth announcements (and now Mommy Cards)

I wish I could help out our family more financially with my business… but other than that I am satisfied.

I read your blog because I love the content (all of it — the personal and the technical) and because I am hoping you will do more with Godly Creatives ;)

My favorite thing when not on the computer is reading.

Blessings, Karla

I love these posts because it’s so fascinating to hear about all of you. Sometimes I start to feel like a conversation hog just yapping about myself all day here and it’s good to hear some personal things from you all.

Rob I know just what you mean about the soap. I’ve been looking everywhere for a travel size bottle of it to take with me because I can’t stand the goop that I get at most public restrooms.

Karla I’m working on the magazine still but it’s been slow getting started because of the holidays, but it’s coming! I’m so glad to hear from a nice SAHM because most I’ve met are a bit too tightly wound for me. :)

Melissa If you ever want to talk blog, call me! I can’t tell people enough how much my business has grown with NO effort from me apart from simply blogging. I can’t remember the last time I paid for an ad anywhere because every job I’ve done has come through my blog or someone who reads it and referred someone.

I wish I could respond to everyone and I might as I have more time. Many of you I know already, but there’s always more to learn! Thanks so much for sharing. If you’re new to this post, go ahead, keep posting comments. I know there are more of you hiding.

My name is Lance from San Francisco, CA. I am a Senior Budget Analyst at UC Berkeley, but I wish I could afford to quit my job and travel the world doing community service both domestically and abroad. This is my first time reading your blog, but I stumbled upon it via the Cork’d website where you were listed as “Cork’d User of the Moment.” I figured anyone who enjoyed wine couldn’t be that bad, so I decided to check out your site.

I’m Brian from Richmond, VA. I’m an 8th grade math teacher. I teach. I design. I art. I cube. I love. Jesus loves me. And I Him.

I’m a dork. Ask my students. Or Rob (still waiting for an update…) And you are a girl, talking about foamy soap, Rob… :)

I read your blog because you are one cool chica. And I like the different designs you come up with. It makes me want to re-design every month. But I don’t. I do have a life. Not much of one. But one.

Favorite things to do away from a computer: I love games. Board games. And video games. But mainly board games. Can anyone say Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne? Movies are a favorite: Usual Suspects is a favorite. So is Brian Regan They’re both favorites. But Brian is more favorite. :)

I’m also an excellent writer. As you can tell.

Natalie Jost left a comment on January 9, 2007 at 11:45 pm | #

Brian are you suggesting I don’t have a life? :D There’s a reason I redesign so often, but I doubt the 90% or so men who read my blog would be able to stomach the conversation surrounding that reason because it has very much to do with my creative cycle being eerily in tune with my “mothering” cycle, if you know what I mean. :P If I didn’t release my creative flatulence here, my poor clients would get the brunt of my junk and I need to work! Ah, jeez, it’s late. Goodnight.

Bron left a comment on January 11, 2007 at 12:08 am | #

Hi there, I’m Bron from Queensland, Australia. I stumbled over your blog quite some time ago. I can’t remember how but I have enjoyed “lurking” around ever since. I’m a web developer for a financial institution here in Australia. I am keen to read as many designers blogs/sites as possible, as I don’t have a great deal of experience, but you are all inspiring, so thats why I read your site. I am also a Christian, so your posts that simply are to do with life and your struggles (or to give advice! :) ) helps me to remember that there are many people in the world who have lives much harder than mine and have lessons to learn, just as I do. Thankyou. When I’m not infront of the computer, I’m riffling through color swatches at hardware stores, practicing double bass, patchworking, catching up with my Mum or going to the gym. All the best for 2007 :-) Bron

David left a comment on January 11, 2007 at 10:11 am | #

Yet another David, but I am an ancient one. I stumbled on to your blog when researching “Textpattern vs. Wordpress” issues. I take it your “Why I am now using Textpattern” and “Txp vs. WP review” blog entries are sort of classics! I am a complete amateur in these things, but am fascinated by design, and have been happily HTMLing since, I dunno, the early 90s.

I live in Edinburgh, and teach biblical studies in the university here (providing another point of contact with the interests of this blog). I’m originally from Toronto, though. I’m not a blogger myself. I lurk. Sometimes I even comment. ;)

SHALOM, David.

Hi, Natalie,

This is actually the first time I’ve ever been to your Web site. I saw a link in your comment on Jeff Croft’s blog. You do nice work!

I am a Web designer in frigid Fairbanks, Alaska (it was 44 degrees below 0 here a couple days ago!). I work at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner full time as well as run my own Web design company, Verticentric Design. I think WordPress rocks!

I am a 24-year veteran at surviving Alaska’s extremes, and live with my wife Caitlin and our daughter Camryn, 18 months. We are expecting a second daughter early next month. Our personal Web site is located at akbourne.com.

Hi Natalie and the rest,

Great idea because people always like to talk about themselves (I’m no exception).

I’m Josh from Polk City, IA by way of Denver, CO. I do many things but my day job is that of a multimedia specialist for a scoreboard company. I also freelance in web and graphic design in my* spare* time, I’m helping to plant a church where I live, and I’m trying to figure out how to be a good dad to my 2 year old daughter and be a good husband to my wonderful wife.

I wish I could stay at home with my family all day and freelance when the time allowed.

I can’t remember exactly how I came accross your blog but I was impacted by your testimony and clear message about the standards for your life. I read because our family dynamic is very similar, we’re both in the midwest and I think you have good things to say. I also love your design work. It’s absolutely goregeous.

I really like playing and watching football and basketball.

Thanks for the opportunity to wax poetic about myself :)

My name is Matt and I am from central Minnesota. I am network administrator for a health care facility. I am happy with what I am doing with my life right now and couldn’t wish for anything better. I have a roof over my head, a great job, a beautiful wife, and a gracious and forgiving God. I read your blog because I like that you also talk about your faith and struggles. I also enjoy your designs and I wish I could even come close to something like you do. My wife and I have a site that we talk about relationships, faith, and some technology. The technology is there by default because it is apart of our relationship because of me…a techie. My favorite thing to do that doesn’t involve a computer is hanging out with my wife. She likes it when I don’t spend too much time on the computer! ;)

I enjoyed reading all the responses to your post. I would do the same thing, but I wouldn’t get an comments back! God Bless!!!!

Hi—Christa from Louisiana. Katrina blew us into Lake Charles, and Rita couldn’t blow us out, so here we are. I found your site, I think through cruising through sites you designed, being captivated by them, and scrolling until I found the name of the web page designer person. And I am so pathetically designer-challenged, but I enjoy seeing what you create.

Teacher of high school English by day, writer aspiring to be published all other times. What I wish I did was own a home in Maui or Kauai and write while I whale watching from my lanai. My favorite thing not connected to my computer is talking to my 18-month-old grandaughter on the phone and traveling to TX to see her as often as I can. I have a blog now, but am so techno-impaired that I just work within the boundaries it provides for me. One of my goals is to be a grown-up writer and have a real web designer—like—you!
God bless! Christa

What I really want to do is Web design and photography. This is my first visit to your site/blog, and I just happened across it by clicking here and there on Color Schemer.com….I was searching for inspiration and here I am. What I’ve seen here is absolutely beautiful! I am also new to blogging and have just barely started a couple of my own. I would like to make a living just using my creativity and my computer….no commute, no boss. :o) My favorite things to do without my computer is scrapbooking, reading, movies and time with my sweetheart and/or kids.

I’m mario64 on the net but my real name is oguchi. i first found you on lastfm not knowing who you are or what you did and somehow stumbled on your site and discovered you design websites which is really neat.

Well i’m from Nigeria, i guess with my name you would be thinking japan but its a nigerian name, however i live in malaysia at the moment.

What do you do? I’m an electrical engineering student who loves computers and design and webdev but not good in any of that stuff. I appreciate good designs and love webapps.

I wish i could travel the world and review nokia phones and build great looking websites where i can showcase my graphic designs, we call all dream right?

I dont come here very often, just once in a while. Basically since the design and layout is always changing i come to see the latest rendition but your blog posts are interesting hope to see that ALA article.

Favorite thing not involving a computer, hmm thats hard. I guess just hanging out with my friends and maybe travelling.

Andrew, Bron, David, Jon, Matt, Christa, Ruben, Thauna, Mario64

I love the way these names flow, so I’m writing them in order, sort of poetic-like. :) So glad to meet you all. A couple of you, your names I recognize but can’t remember where. Thanks so much for your feedback. I appreciate hearing from you and hope you’ll have more to say as the year goes on.

Josh, as always, a pleasure to see you.

Snook (or do you prefer Jonathan), I’m flattered to count you as a reader (and a twitter friend). :) Yours was one of the first blogs in my feed reader over a year ago, so thanks for your support!

Some of your comments, either here or elsewhere have struck a chord with me. I think you’d be a cool person to hang out with.

Jesse – thanks for the link. Turns out it’s one of my free wordpress templates. There are thousands of them out there, so I don’t know most of the people who have my name on their site. :)

Jonathan – Sounds like Snookie is out then? :) Thanks for the validation. It’s too bad I’ll be missing SXSW again this year because I would have loved to have been able to hang out with you to. :(

Robert left a comment on January 17, 2007 at 2:58 pm | #

Yo Nat! It’s Robert Evans. I’m from San Diego (sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet :( ) doing what I love, web programming.

When I’m not working or doing projects, I love to just relax and hang out with my wife and little girl.

Not going to SXSW??????!!?!?!! Bummer!!

Natalie Jost left a comment on January 17, 2007 at 3:36 pm | #

Robert – I KNOW!!! I missed last year because I just didn’t know when it was (was seriously out of the loop on that one), but vowed to go this year (forgetting how well I keep vows – aside from marriage, of course)), but then all the hotel rooms were booked by the time I started making plans to go (November). Plus, I ended up spending my SXSW money on our trip to San Diego this Christmas, so now it’s just a matter of not having the money or a place to stay (might room with a friend but it’s a sticky thing, me being a woman, rooming with a man, you know), so I’m sitting out this time and I’m planning ahead (NOW) for ’08. Wow. Was that all one sentence? Oy.

Christy left a comment on January 17, 2007 at 6:37 pm | #

Hi Natalie, Sorry I’m late to the comments. I’m a native of South Florida, webmaster 9 to 5, I also freelance when I can. I absolutely love what I do and wouldn’t change it (except the job title).

When I am not on the computer I love interior design, reading, hanging out with my husband and daughter.

I’m sure you already know why I visit here so much but just for the record it’s because you rock as a designer and your take on color is fantastic. Because I pick up little tricks and such when you let them slip :) I also read for the fun stuff… family and such, love your photography and your poems. But really, it’s about the color :)

Oh, and I found your site by way of my site as the first template I used with my WordPress blog was a Natalie Jost template.

1) I am Michael Lee
